San Francisco's hotel workforce is heavily immigrant and substantially Spanish-speaking, particularly in housekeeping, banquet and stewarding, with strong union representation and defined promotion ladders. Conference guests are technical, international and demanding. English proficiency is repeatedly what separates a long-tenured back-of-house employee from the guest-facing role they are otherwise ready for.
