Avalon's year-round community is substantially Spanish-speaking, and the island's hotels, restaurants and tour operators draw their staff from it, with scarce housing making every trained employee worth keeping. Guests are domestic weekenders, cruise passengers ashore for a day and international visitors, all arriving with the same logistics questions about ferries, golf carts and tours. On an island with no bilingual manager to borrow from the next property, the person at the desk handles it in English or it does not get handled.
